Born on 7th May,1861 in a Brahmin family in Calcata,Tagore was brought up in a progressive and enlightened family.His education was largely self-education.He could not stand the rigid discipline of school and college education. He  studied for sometime in the University of Londan.Rabindranath was a born poet and he wrote profusely.He wrote lyrics,dance-dramas,verse-dramas, forces,short stories, novels, letters and eassays both literary and social.Indeed,here is God's plenty.Gitanjali is a collection of lyrics taken form his various poetical works.Rabindranath was awarded the Nobel prize for Gitanjali in 1913.Famous english poet Yeats wrote in the preface: these songs are eternal; "travellers will hum them on the highway and rowing rivers.Lovers, while they await one another,in murmuring them, this love of God a magic gulf wherein their own more bitter passion may bathe and renew its youth"He was awarded the knighthood. The British monarch in 1915,but he renounced the Knighthood in 1919, in protest against the barbaric cruelty of the British government on unarmed and innocent Indians in Jallian- wallabagh.Tagore,however, also criticised some of the features of the Indian nationalist movement.The imagery of clouds has added to the sense of gloom and separation that poet feels.
